Germaine Greer is My Fantasy Girl

Third Wave Feminism:

The radical notion that women can wear bras.

I have to say that I quite like my bra and would have absolutely no desire to run off and burn it in a giant bonfire surrounded by bald women with hairy legs and armpits.

But to be honest I had never seen that as the mark of a feminist, it wasn't until one day in yr 10 English when our teacher asked all the feminists to raise their hands and I was one of the very few to do so, did I realise there was a slight problem. I had always thought of a feminist as a woman who believed in equality, I hadn't ever encountered the whole 'man hater' thing or the bra burning un-shaven lesbian stereotype prior to that day. My English teacher also looked a little disappointed that all the girls (three quarters of the class might I add) did not raise their hands, but neither did she look particularly surprised.

So does that make me a third-wave feminist or just a plain old feminist?

According to all the magazines and newspaper articles third-wave feminism is all about women having the 'choice' to either stay at home and be a Stepford wife or go out and fight men for a living. Is it me or does that sound familiar?
The Damsel in Distress Vs. The Seductress.

The Housewife Vs. The Career-woman.

Are they really that far apart?

I don't think they are and because of this I DON'T think we've come all that far in the equality game, so when I hear those women saying they want to stay home and look after the kiddies for the rest of their lives I fight the impulse to run up shake them senseless.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to find a partner, there's nothing wrong with wanting to raise your kids well, but do you have to compromise your self-respect to do it? If you don't stand up for your rights then who will?

Why must your life be defined by your marital status?

You don't have to burn your bra hate men and shave your head to be a feminist these days, you just need to have some respect for yourself and your (this makes me cringe a little) sisters.

Arguably you can respect yourself and not be a cut-throat career woman and this is fine, there is not reason to be a 'pitbull' who wears 'lipstick'

< --- Palin, the embodiment of feminism

but you should be financially independent, you should know your rights and what you deserve because that is the truly empowered woman.

Just ask Taylor Swift.

(Haha I just posted a comment but made a few spelling mistakes so I deleted it... here's the more grammaticalish version)-

Nice work :) You actually make me inclined to declare myself a feminist. Though I've always been a little scared by feminism tbh because of all the Germaine Greer bra-burning etc. I prefer to respect myself not so much as a woman, but as a person, and that's the way I view other people regardless of their sex. But you're right about female stereotyping and how it proves that we still haven't come as far as we should.

ah you are the 'this post has been removed by the author'! Well thanks for telling me otherwise I'd be losing sleep over it (no seriously I would be).

MY WORK IS DONE! I have successfully removed another feminist from the closet, well at least partially...and yeah I agree! Gender equality is all about seeing people as people not as 'me tarzan you jane' kind of thing.
=D
